The Planet Wheeler Foundation
The Planet Wheeler Foundation is a private family foundation established in 2008 by Maureen and Tony Wheeler, founders of Lonely Planet Publications.
Planet Wheeler is based in Melbourne, Australia, and most of our funding is allocated to Southeast Asia, East and West Africa, Nepal and Afghanistan. Our areas of focus are health, education, human rights and climate change.
Our purpose, put simply, is to support practical and effective projects making a difference in the alleviation of poverty.
During the years that Maureen and I were with Lonely Planet its writers, researchers and staff regularly alerted us to important projects in low income countries, projects where the company’s Lonely Planet Foundation could help. The Planet Wheeler Foundation has grown out of that original idea of going there and seeing what is happening first-hand. We don’t do things at arm’s length, we relate to our projects close up, projects which are often local and always with people who are totally involved. We find those projects exactly the same way those Lonely Planet experts did, we go and see for ourselves.
