About Us

History

Even though Planet Wheeler Foundation was only established in 2008, our history goes back a long way. Travelling widely as founders and authors of Lonely Planet Publications, Maureen and Tony Wheeler saw the need first hand to support those more in need than themselves.

They began supporting international development decades ago and as Lonely Planet book sales grew over the years, so did their passion for giving. Lonely Planet first began a policy of donating a fixed percentage of profits to NGOs in 1987.

The sale of a majority stake in Lonely Planet Publications to BBC Worldwide in 2007 forced a change in structure and Planet Wheeler Foundation was born.

Planet Wheeler is a separate entity to Lonely Planet Publications. However we do work out of the Lonely Planet offices in Melbourne, Australia and source recommendations from Lonely Planet authors and staff traversing the world.

Planet Wheeler Foundation has no religious or political affiliations.
